Students will explore vocabulary necessary for all art classes by demonstrating Mastery of the Art Elements and Principles of Design.

Students will explore MCEscher as in their very own Tessellations

- 2-D Letter transformed into 3-D block letter (Architectural Letters)
- Students will demonstrate understanding of manipulating color hues using only the primary colors and black and white (to adjust value) to create all colors they need to paint their architectural letters.

Students will explore MCEscher as in their very own Tessellations
- Students will demonstrate general knowledge of Op Art as an art movement.
- Students will demonstrate mastery of one technique used by creating their own Tessellation.
- Students will verbalize their use of repetition, patterning, and color use for a purpose.

Students will Explore the Constructionist Movement

- Students will identify the role of the Industrial Revolution in the art world
- Students will identify major artists of the movement
- Students will explore national and international examples including political pieces
- Students will construct a 9 flag display booklet of an individual artist
- Students will design their own version of the artwork using found materials to create their assemblage.
(I will provide Styrofoam, cardboard, glue, tape, as well as paints. Other items must be brought in.) - Students will give an in class presentation on their artist as well as an end of the term critique presentation over all their work.

Students will explore the challenges of contour drawing while emphasizing their understanding of tone and facial symmetry.

Students will explore the elements and principles of art by exploring various cultures use of the coil basket.
Unit 3: Planning processes

- Students will express an understanding of visual emotions by creating a cartoon character.
- Students will use their "mugshot" as a reference for a 3-D form version.
- Students will demonstrate mastery of this project by completing their 3-D form and a 3 framed comic strip depicting an event in history. (Events will be provided based on the particular history classes they are taking)
Optical Art (Principle theme: Balance Element Theme: space and line)
- Students will explore the works of Bridget Riley (Op Artist)
- Students will explore repetition and rhythm as seen in Bridget Riley's artwork to design their own piece inspired by her.
- Students will conduct a class critique of student work (remain positive- Constructive Criticism)
- Students will prepare their work for display (with assistance)
Unit 4: Fabric Work
Scratch Board (Principle:
- Students will explore the world of positive and negative space as a pre-cursor to Batik Making. This will be a brief project that will be completed in conjunction with Batik making given the time constraints of Batik dying.
- Student will create a scratch-board project after viewing a tutorial using photographs taken at home or found online.
Batik (Principle theme: Dominance Element Theme: Color)
- Students will explore the art of cloth batik methods. Students will bring in their own fabric to batik or choose from various remnants available in class. 1. Video Quiz 2. Batik Painting tutorial
- Students will demonstrate pre-planning and understand the importance of it as related to dying
Weaving: (Principle Theme: Unity/harmony and Balance Element Theme: Texture and shape)
Students will explore the elements and principles of art by exploring various cultures use of the coil basket.
- Students will preview the powerpoint pdf on how to construct a coil basket.
- Students will utilize their design notebook to design and plan.
- Students will create a minimum 5" vessel. Those choosing to create something larger can purchase their own cotton clothes line from Wal-Mart or crafts store approx $4 for 50'. Otherwise they will be given approx 9'.

Unit 5 Collage and Print making

Lino cuts
- Students will research various pop art artists such as Andy Warhol.
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of positive and negative space creating multiple templates.
- Students will explore the art of lino-prints.
- Students will create their own inspired lino-prints incorporating a minimum of 2 lino-cuts.
- Students will explore the cubist movement.
- Students will research key figures from history in the fields of history and science.
- Students will create cubist clay portraits to be displayed.
- Students will identify their figure's contributions to the world and incorporate those influences when choosing various texture techniques to incorporate.
- Mosaic mirrors or pictures using broken glass and tiles.
- Mosaic flower pots
- Students will explore the works of Roman Mosaic work prior to applying the techniques to their own designs. Students may be required to pay a small supply fee if they wish to do a larger piece beyond the small classroom supplied mosaic picture. It is expected that a mirror will cost approximately $10-$20 depending on the size and cost of supplies.
